IMMEDIATE DATA 1 / 2022
Moving image, single-channel video installation with stereo sound, 8 minutes, 4K.
This project evolves from diary-like footage intuitively captured with an iPhone, forming an immediate databank of visual consciousness. Each raw snippet crystallizes a tension between the observer and the observed: an idle gaze following pigeons chasing one another at a bus stop, an empathic regard for a man napping on an early morning train, a contemplative look at a spider perched on the rim of a lamp.
Infused with subtle visual cues, the video unfolds against the ambient backdrop of an aquarium soundtrack, simultaneously internalizing the exhibition space and externalizing the viewer. This sonic transformation, from the interiority of an art space to the exteriority of a fish tank, facilitates a form of perceptual transcendence, a shift between two disparate modes of seeing: one defined by self-reflection and emotional projection, a view “seen from nearby”; the other by detachment and otherness, a view “looked at from outside.”
Through these shifting lenses of perception, the work traces nuanced adjustments in awareness, as we oscillate between first-person subjectivity and the experience of being the object of another’s gaze. Immediate Data 1 envisions a profound sense of intersubjectivity, punctuating the dynamic positioning of the gaze while processing the immediate flow of visual data across time and duration, producing a layered and unstable visual meaning.
